M. V. Raghavan, Our Patron
MVR was one of the true leaders of Men Kerala produced. Hailing from an ordinary family of workers in Pappinissery in Cannore district, he joined communist movement in his early teens and soon after became it’s most popular leader. He served two terms as Minister of Co-operation and ports in Kerala during 1991-1996 and 2001-2006 respectively. Late. M. V. Raghavan was a visionary who had revolutionised the cooperative sector in Kerala and ensured that the co-operative sector actively participated in the health and education segment of Kerala.

Known as the doyen of the co-operative movement in the state, M. V. Raghavan was instrumental in setting up numerous other institutions across Kerala, always tapping into further possibilities of the co-operative sector to create new jobs. A leader who helped transform the banking and healthcare system in Kerala, the backbone of a developing society, M. V. Raghavan became a votary of reforms and development, inspiring generations to dream and make them possible through co-operation. MVR Cancer Centre, a Calicut Co-operative Bank initiative, pays tribute to M. V. Raghavan; the leader who dreamt of quality healthcare that was accessible to all.

Over 12 million people are diagnosed with cancer every year. The disease took the lives of nine million people in 2005. Nearly 9 million people are said to fall prey to the disease in 2015, whereas the number is said to increase to 11.4 million in the year 2030. The most noted fact is that 70% of all these cancer deaths happen in low and middle income countries.

India alone has 2.5 million registered cases of cancer, with half a million new cases being diagnosed every year. Approximately, 826,000 people were killed by the disease in 2005. The most common types of cancer in India are Cervix Uteri and Breast for women and Lung and Mouth Cancer among men.

A team of 60 eminent doctors who have proven their merit in their respective fields have joined the team to achieve this. There are 30-odd different specialties of oncology in the institution to fulfil the dream.

We want to achieve a quality in cancer treatment that will be the benchmark for other institutions who offer cancer treatment. We also believe in the principle of ‘prevention is better than cure’ and hence plan to take up interventions aimed at prevention of cancer and early detection.

The MVRCCRI, set up by the Care Foundation initiated by City Service Cooperative Bank, is situated on 15.5 acre property at Vellasseri in Kozhikode district with 300 bed strength spread over six lakhs square feet area. The Centre is named after the late CMP leader M. V. Raghavan. Inaugurated on January 17 2017, both the OP and IP departments are functional from January 18 2017. The Hospital established at a cost of INR 350 Crore has spent INR 150 crore for acquiring the latest Equipment.
